6.5 Chapter 6 Author's Notes and Justification

  •  The only time Anna is listed as a lacemaker on a census once they came to America was on the 1875 Kansas census. All other census records list her as a homemaker. I believe she might have used her skills as a lacemaker to earn some extra money during the early years in Kansas.
  • According to the 1875 Kansas census, they had two horses.
  • Anna brought her mother’s sourdough yeast starter with her when they came to America according to a newspaper article telling about an interview with ARJ’s younger sister, Viola.

5.4 Chapter 5 Author's Notes and Justification

  • Arthur’s older brothers, William, and Albert came to America a month before Arthur with their wives and children. They settled in downtown Denver, Colorado.
  • Milo B Kellogg was postmaster of Wichita in 1874.
  • Anna and her mother were trained lace makers. Anna had lived with her uncle while she worked in a lace factory in Budleigh, Devonshire as a young woman. Her mother was a widow working as a maid in a large manor on Isle of Wight. She and Anna’s sister won some awards in pillow lace and embroidery according to the Ryde newspaper of the time.
  • The Kansas census for 1875 listed the crops Arthur named in this chapter.
  • According to the 1875 Kansas census, they had some chickens.
  • Ryde has a large sand beach on the west side of the dock. Ocean birds gather at the water’s edge.

4.4 Chapter 4 Author's Notes and Justification

 

  • Arthur brought a euphonium with him when he left England. Family stories tell it was bought for him by his father in Ryde when he was young. The instrument remains in the family.
  • ‘Abide with Me’ was a well-known hymn in the Church of England, and ‘Blessed Assurance was a new hymn that was circulating through church hymnals and magazines by 1873.
  • The Dibbens family was known to be very musical. ARJ and his wife, Jessie, often sang together in church and for other meetings in the community later in life.

3.4 Chapter 3 Author's Notes and Justification

  •   Arthur Robert Jarman was known by family members as ARJ most of his life. When he was

    older, he sometimes went by Arthur but was easily confused with his father when listed that way in the newspapers.
  •   The Dibbens family left many family members on the Island when they came to America.
  •   According to early photos, there were several grocery stores on Wichita’s main street by 1874.
  • One dog is listed on the 1875 Kansas census for their farm.

2.4 Chapter 2 Author's Notes and Justification

 

  •   Arthur filed his first papers (for immigration) on Feb 11, 1874, in Wichita, Kansas according to his naturalization certificate.
  •   Wichita was a young town when the Dibbens family arrived in 1873. It was named for the Wichita tribe who occupied the land where the city was built. J.R. Mead built the first trading post near the confluence of the Arkansas and the Little Arkansas Rivers in 1868. Wichita was incorporated as a city of the third class on July 21, 1870.
  •   The Sheriff had jurisdiction over Sedgwick County. Sheriff Massey was sheriff for portions of 1874.
  •   The small jail building at Wichita Cowtown was likely in use in 1874.
  •   Arthur was charged with perjury when the men he’d reported denied they’d done anything wrong, essentially accusing him of lying on an official report. At the time, perjury carried a sentence of 7 years. 
  •   The law firm of Howitt, Salisbury, and Brewer represented Arthur in the trial. George Salisbury and Judge Howitt were both on the case. Howitt was a former judge himself and was referred to as 'Judge Howitt' in the community.
  •   The Kansas Motto is on the Kansas State Seal. It was adopted in May of 1861.
