2.4 Chapter 2 Author's Notes and Justification

  •   Arthur filed his first papers (for immigration) on Feb 11, 1874, in Wichita, Kansas according to his naturalization certificate.
  •   Wichita was a young town when the Dibbens family arrived in 1873. It was named for the Wichita tribe who occupied the land where the city was built. J.R. Mead built the first trading post near the confluence of the Arkansas and the Little Arkansas Rivers in 1868. Wichita was incorporated as a city of the third class on July 21, 1870.
  •   The Sheriff had jurisdiction over Sedgwick County. Sheriff Massey was sheriff for portions of 1874.
  •   The small jail building at Wichita Cowtown was likely in use in 1874.
  •   Arthur was charged with perjury when the men he’d reported denied they’d done anything wrong, essentially accusing him of lying on an official report. At the time, perjury carried a sentence of 7 years.
  •   The law firm of Howitt, Salisbury, and Brewer represented Arthur in the trial. George Salisbury and Judge Howitt were both on the case. Howitt was a former judge himself and was referred to as 'Judge Howitt' in the community.
  •   The Kansas Motto is on the Kansas State Seal. It was adopted in May of 1861.
