1.4 Chapter 1 Author's Notes and Justification


  • There was an incident documented by an article found in the Wichita paper in June 1874. It describes a mob that showed up at Arthur and Anna’s cabin in Payne Township, Sedgwick County, Kansas. This chapter was written using the details from that article.
  • Arthur and Anna immigrated to America about 1872-3 with their three children, Arthur Robert Jarman (ARJ), John William (JW), and Eva Anna. Edmund Walter was born in June 1874.
  • Arthur and Anna came to Kansas in a covered wagon in October 1873 according to Arthur’s obituary. They had a team of horses according to the farm records on the Kansas census of 1875.
  •  Robert Williams is one of the leaders of the mob that was a part of the lawsuit.
  • The Isle of Wight is famous for its tall chalk cliffs.
